INTERPOL | TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS
The essence of this album is pure New York City early 00’s. Black, white, and red imagery bring a minimalist aesthetic to the band’s output while the designer fitted suits mimic the dry delivery of Paul Banks’ vocal delivery. Joy Division is an obvious influence in this album, but the band has created an atmosphere entirely their own. It’s stark, angular, and poignant. Songs like NYC offered a creepy resonance around the 9/11 era, while gems like Stella Was A Diver still deliver a classic indie sting. There is lushness inside the chill and it feel claustrophobic and expansive all at once. This is music for chilly cold nights and desolate atmospheres in grey skies above the cities.
